The oropharyngeal administration of colostrum in preterm newborns may offer immunological benefits through the contact of protective biofactors with oropharyngeal-associated lymphoid tissue. The objective was to elucidate the influence of maternal colostrum administration in the oropharynx of premature babies with clinical suspicion of early neonatal sepsis. We selected twenty newborns, admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a public hospital during the study period. Raw colostrum was placed on the oropharyngeal mucosa until the 5th day of life. Blood samples were collected to complement the diagnosis. The study concluded that newborns who received oral colostrum in the first days of life reached birth weight faster than babies who did not.
